Line-height CSS bug?
Not sure if its line-height, but it looks messed up. On such a high profile page you’d think someone would fix this asap. Normally I’d dig into the CSS to see what’s the issue but I’m a bit too lazy today =)
Rebooted cable modem, back to good speeds
Let’s see how long this lasts. Not sure if the reboot helped or just coincidence (assuming its the latter)…

Oceanic Road Runner Service
Today I finally made the switch from Oceanic Road Runner cable internet to Hawaiian Telecom DSL. The speed is much slower but I’m hoping the better uptime and consistency will make up for the crappy residential Oceanic Road Runner service I’ve had since May. Many days I barely get over 1Mbps. I decided to start posting my speedtest results. Actually I didn’t switch, I’m giving Hawaiian Telecom a try, I have 90 days to try it out and see if its what I need/want.
Sr. Web Developer Salary Comparison
Just for fun I ran the numbers between where we live now (Honolulu, HI) versus where I used to work (Cupertino, CA). Seems like about $10k more when working in Cupertino. Numbers are from Salary.com’s Salary Wizard. This isn’t my job title, but I have a good idea on salaries for web developer’s as I managed (and hired) a team of web developer’s for MobileMe when I was the UI engineering manager. I’d say the numbers for Cupertino are within the ballpark. Honolulu? I have no clue how accurate these numbers are. Anyone from Honolulu know the accuracy represented below?
Things to splurge on, your monitor and your chair
I’m a sucker for any product that boasts an exoskeleton as the new Herman Miller Embody has. You can read all about it in their press release. I want one of these, in orange. If you could get one, what color would you get? The blue is a bit too bright for me. Santa, are you listening?
More on the Firewire Fiasco (okay, not a fiasco, but still…)
I posted about this yesterday in this post, and today it’s on TUAW. Read their post here. I agree with their assessment … I’ll miss daisy chaining drives. But the most important thing is that I always was fond of the Firewire logo, I’ll miss that the most =)
Firewire, where oh’ where art thou?
Our announcements today were just what the rumor mill spilled, new MacBooks, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pros with the glossy bevel a’la iPhone/iMac and the “brick” enclosures. Beautiful stuff, I still marvel at how much better our laptops look design wise from anything on the market. Anyway, something surprised me today during the announcements … what happened to good ol’ firewire 400? It’s nowhere to be found. It’s not an available port on the MacBook Pro’s and its not part of the Cinema Display plug anymore (tho magsafe is a brilliant idea to add to the Cinema Display).
I use FW800 alot but my camcorder and a few portable drives use the old Firewire still, oh noes! Are there adapters for FW800 to FW400? How will the loss of a FW400 port affect you? Leave a comment and we can wallow in misery together! he he he.
Stumbling Through StumbleUpon

I’ve only recently started to use StumbleUpon but already I don’t like it for the following reasons which I’ll elaborate on below.
1. Toolbar.
2. Edit.
3. See item 1. Somehow a list just doesn’t feel right with just two items =)
Nitty Gritty
1. Toolbar? A what? Firefox and IE only?
Yes I know, as of today they’ve announced a shift in their toolbar requirement. You will no longer be required to download and install the toolbar to use their site but I tested earlier today and there was no way to change my password without installing the toolbar. That’s insane. It’s a website, why can’t we have simple account management in the web UI? Also, I don’t know if the toolbar will still be required for other features and I’m too tired to test at the moment.
2. Editing wasn’t working for me today. I could add favorites via the toolbar but not subsequently edit them using the web UI.
So, eBay paid $75 million for SU last year… $75 million! I’d love to use it more if they could just fix and/or remove the obstacles I mentioned above. Hopefully some small fraction of that $75 million is being spent wisely. Do you like StumbleUpon? If so, or if not, comment below with your reasons… I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Old Designs…
Ever come across some of your old work? Peek in the messy closet of old designs? I did, and here’s one that I found from awhile back that I actually like… but the site is now long gone, I let it expire last month. The concept was the “Department of Moving Pixels”… like the DMV but instead of motor vehicles, etc.. you get it right? It was for motion graphics/flash animation work but its now in the my archive folder of dead ideas. The gradients and stuff were from a template I bought once from Template Monster.
